We love our playful pooches, and for many, they are our children – they just happen to be a little furrier than our human kids. However, all that fur does some crazy things, including leaving that horrible dog odor behind wherever our pup decides to go. Now, we all know we aren't getting rid of the dog, but we just want that odor to go away. If this sounds familiar, these tips will help you eliminate dog odor so you can enjoy your fur baby even more.

Step 1 – Clean Everything

I know, cleaning the entire house is not on everyone's favorite things to do list, but it has to be done if you want to eliminate the unmistakable smell of dog. There are few things you will need to do as a part of the cleaning process, including:

  • Dismantle the Furniture – This means you need to take all of those pillows and blankets off so you can wash them. You will also need to remove the cushion covers if possible so that they can be washed as well. Remove all bed linens, and other fabric that your pet lies on frequently.
  • Vacuum – Once you have torn everything apart, you need to vacuum everywhere. Sweep under the furniture and beds, and make sure to use it on the inside of your couches, loveseats, and chairs. You should vacuum every square inch of carpet, and don't forget to get into all the corners and other places where dust and dirt like to hide. Don't forget to use the vacuum on both sides of your mattresses as well if your dog lies up there.

Step 2 – Deodorize

You will want to gather a few supplies in order to completely deodorize everything. You're probably thinking you need to run out and buy the latest pet odor removal solution, but this is not the case. All you need is apple cider vinegar, laundry detergent (oxygenated or oxy types work best), a fabric scrub brush, and two boxes of baking soda. Once you have these items together, you will need to do the following:

  • Mix the appropriate amount of detergent for the size of the load, and measure out ¼ cup of the apple cider vinegar.
  • Use this mixture to wash all of your cushion covers, pillows, blankets, and bed linens.
  • Sprinkle the furniture, carpets, and mattresses with the baking soda, and use the brush to work it into the fibers.
  • Allow this to sit overnight, or apply everything and allow it to sit for several hours.
  • Vacuum up all the baking soda, and put all your furniture and bedding back together.

This is one of the best ways to eliminate dog odor without getting rid of the dog. For even better results, complete this process, and have a professional carpet cleaner come in and go over it again. You can also use a rental unit yourself to get the same results. After this, make sure to bathe the dog as well.
